A beautiful college coed becomes suspicious of some weird actions overseas by a naturalized American college professor and confides in her instructor, who alerts a friend in the FBI. It turns out the professor, who conceals a passionate hatred for the US, is in league with Al Qaeda in an ingenious scheme to sneak radioactive “dirty bombs” into the United States to explode simultaneously in New York City and Washington, DC. The intelligence services of Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and Interpol become involved in the FBI’s frantic efforts to thwart the plot.

Having read all of Beecher,s previous novels, it was not much of a leap to purchase this book. I knew that his career as a
journalist and as a member of the Dept. Of Defense gave him the background to be able to research such a topic with intelligence and understanding. I was not in the least disappointed. Nuclear Revenge is written clearly and in a frightening and exciting manner. I, of course, knew this was a novel but had the urge several times to check on the front cover to make sure this was not a real journalistic report. It certainly makes the reader consider the possibility that such a horrible act could actually happen. I strongly recommend this book as I had difficulty putting my IPad down and going to sleep

Nuclear Revenge William Beecher 9781456537555 Books Reviews

I read my daily and I read a lot of books every year. Being a writer myself, I'm a stickler for quality editing. I also like a compelling story. Well, as the other reviews say, this book is worth your investment.
Nuclear Revenge, a suspense novel, is to date, my favorite, Beecher novel. This Pulitzer Prize winning author and former Washington correspondent for the Boston Globe, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times knows his subject, how to write and what to write. Beecher's career spans 30+ years, with a portion of it spent as a top official in the Defense Department and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This guy has been there, seen it all, and now he's telling what he saw. I'm betting that a good bit of this book is based on real experience. Read the book.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist William Beecher has written a fast-moving up-to-date techno-thriller about a sleeper terrorist who plans to smuggle highly dangerous nuclear material into the U.S. Mr. Beecher's experiences with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has given him insight into detailed information about scary nuclear isotopes. The semi-documentary style adds credence to the story. All-in-all, an exciting page-turner; highly recommended.
Well written, meticulously researched, not nearly as over the top fear mongering as the cover would suggest. I found it hard to put down and will look for more from this author. A pity about the blatant stereotypes on the cover. Ignore them and enjoy the book!
This really makes you think. How we accidentally get the information we need to stop terror. This will encourage me to keep my eyes and ears open just in case. Read the book and you will understand. This was interesting from beginning to end. This was another great book from e readers free book. Love them.
President Obama and several of his cabinet members have said that terrorist getting a nuclear weapon or nuclear material that could be made into a "dirty bomb" was what kept them awake at night because if the terrorist got it they would certainly try to use it. Nuclear Revenge lays out a very realistic situation that brings all these fears into a story that is fast moving and gut reneching. It is very realistic in all technical details and how Government Agencies really work. A must read for anyone interested in the security of our nation. All of Beecher's books have been great reads, but this is his best yet!! He cannot stop now.
No question that the author knows his subject matter, and it's very thought-provoking, scary stuff.
That said, I was really suprised to see that he was a Pulitzer Prize winner and authored 3 previous novels.

I give major credit to anyone who goes through the effort of writing and completing a book. Also, since getting my first 3.5 years ago, I've read at least 150 books by new authors, many of them self-published. This book struck me as being written by someone who was very new to writing.

***Semi-Spoilers Below***

The characters were mostly 2-dimensional and some of their motivations paper-thin. For example

Professor Grumbach - His father was an American GI who knocked up and abandoned a French farm girl. Grumbach spent his childhood being hounded and harassed as a bastard in his French village(really??). So, he grows up hating the entire United States and is OK with helping to create dirty bombs to take out New York and Washington. Bullied as child, so he'll blow the world. Bwahahahaha.

Arabella - Pouty beautiful co-ed who wants to seduce the professor and play spy.

Homer Goodbody - A shy geeky unattractive Physics department teaching assistant who apparently has no friends spills his random suspicions about dastardly doings to a pretty girl just because she looks at him crosseyed. Does it get any more stereotyped?

Tim O'Reilly - Needs money for his sick wife, so he agrees to endanger his job (and family's future) by stealing radioactive materials that he knows will be used to hurt a large number of people. If he quietly reported these guys to the government, maybe they would have helped him financially for stopping a major terrorist attack. Never hurts to ask...

Point of view of the entire novel was all over the place. It started with Professor Robbins in the Prologue and Chapter 1, so it appeared that he and Arabella would be driving the narrative. Then it switches to 3rd person for large chunks of the book. Once the terrorist plot starts getting rolled up, Robbins and Arabella basically disappear until the end.

There are also several places where the POV changes inappropriately within a chapter. For example, one chapter starts in 3rd person with Arabella talking to Homer. When that's done, she wants to go talk to Robbins. "She hoped she could still catch Professor Robbins. ... She headed for the adjunct teacher's lounge. As luck would have it, I was in there grading the quiz I'd just given". Chapter concludes in Robbins 1st person POV. Multiple POV within the same paragraph? There are a few of these. This is not good storytelling.

References from many decades but this one. The dangers in this book are a product of the post-9/11 world, but the lens feels very '70's -'80's. For example, Arabella is described as a 'knockout' and a 'vixen'. The main terrorists' super power is that they are both black belts in karate. Haiiyaa! Arabella has a listening device in a broach. And Homer is watching porn on his.. VCR? DVD players are already starting to disappear...

Plot implausabilities include The head of the campus police department has the FBI on his speed dial, and knows exactly who to call to see if they're running a covert operation on his campus. The FBI agrees to use an untrained college student to get critical information. She's then running around loose with information about the plot without being watched over by the government. She drops in on the FBI and gives them her theory, which helps move the investigation forward. The FBI, Homeland Security, M1-5, and other global intelligence agencies all play nice together and seamlessly share information to contain the plot.

Again, I appreciate the effort that goes into writing a book. But weak plotting, characterization, and storytelling structure kept this one from working for me.
