Queen Cynewise returns in the second book of the popular series that examines her life, married to one of the greatest warrior-kings in Anglo-Saxon history King Penda, founder of Mercia, one of the seven warring kingdoms that eventually united to become England. Known for killing more kings than any other of his age, Penda ruled in a Britain that seethed with violent struggles between rival kings who ruled by bloody sword and sealed alliances with forced marriages.
Christianity was just beginning to sweep the land--where most still practiced Anglo-Saxon paganism--in the time before the Viking invasion, generations before Alfred the Great. Told from her perspective, this is a richly imagined and gritty tale of a woman just trying to make it in a savage world, where--much like today--choices were limited, men held all the power, and it took courage to survive.
Note this book contains explicit violence and adult themes.

There are aspects of this book that are very good. There are also aspects that should have been edited out. The author seemed to lose focus for a while. I wish the author had spent more time sharing the story of Queen Cynewise, and her intereractions and contributions, even more of the dynamics of her relationships with her children and stepchildren. There was an excessive amount of time, and description spent on the pagan rituals. I wish there would be more indepth development of the characters.Product details

The Last Great Pagan Queen Book Two Maserfeld edition by Jayne Stone Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
plot/story better than the quality of the writing
The pendulum swings back and forth seeking center and women must learn to believe actions instead of words. Wyrd. Historical perspective warns how much we have to lose.
Very disappointed- no real storyline at all - I preferred Book 1- I actually found it quite crude In parts
The queen is snarky but in a way that we are all. Good writer.
Quite a good book. Very well written. Wish we knew more of the women from these times. Their lives would be even more interesting.
I enjoyed a majority of the book but it did drag in parts (particularly the long winded description of a winter celebration). I also wish it was a complete story. I love the historical detail and main character. A good read for those who enjoy less romanticized historical fiction.
These books are just soft porn wrapped around a supposed Druid Queen. I barely made it through the first two books in the series and will not read the third. Completely unrealistic to the time with modern sensibilities that would not have existed back then.
